Monk by the Sea by Friedrich Caspar David
I saw this painting for the first time today in my Modern Art I class. Though you can’t get the complete effect without seeing in person, viewing it projected on this huge screen was so jarring for me. I rarely have kind of extremely intense emotional reaction to a painting. Immediately I felt pulled into the landscape. I could hear the waves, I could smell the sea, I felt the breeze hitting my face, and the sand squishing between my toes. I was immediately transported to this cold beach, watching the monk stand alone against this vast sky. This work creates such a sense of awe at the majesty of nature and thus an awe of some kind of God or at least creation itself.
It’s funny, because someone in my class said they really disliked this painting because it was somber and depressing. It is true that along with this sense of seeing a scene of overwhelming beauty, I also felt a little bit of discomfort. However, I did not see this as a bad thing. It reminded me of that moment when you realize how insignificant you are relative to the world, to the universe. It is a feeling that can produce both great relief and profound anxiety. It is wonderful because you are a small part of this greater picture, but at the same time it makes you feel helpless against these powerful forces.
In short, I adore this painting.

Day 06 (Song that reminds you of somewhere) | Until Morning by Dashboard Confessional

I once went to the Jersey shore for a week with my two friends Gabby and Erin. On this trip, I heard more Dashboard Confessional in one concentrated time than I ever thought I would in my life, and for the most part, I’m okay with that. Now I have forever connected Dashboard with the beach house and Jersey shore and our continuous trips there where Erin will play Dashboard only reinforces this connection. This particular song was selected because it was the first Dashboard song I ever knew the words to. It was played pretty often, accompanied by Erin’s famous commentary that I will not name. I only recently got into Dashboard, but I think they will now always have a certain nostalgia factor for me. It’s pretty awesome.

Lyrics:

It was the year, I crashed my motorbike.
I think it was the summer.
I think you whispered
"When you gonna wake up.
When you gonna wake up?”

Dear, slip these on your tongue,
Little seeds of reinvention
and Angels’ hands,
the medicine of modern man.

Wait now, tell me that this isn’t over.
Hang on just long enough.

If this is heaven
or if it’s just a warning,
say you will stay with me
even if it’s just ‘til morning.
If this is over then why is it so hard?
just say you will stay with me
one more night.

Stay here and we can start again.
We could be made over.
You’ll hear us shouting
"When you gonna wake up.
When you gonna wake up?”

Scared, well everyone gets scared.
Just signal when you’re ready
and Angels’ hands
sleep so steady, sleep so steady.

Wait now, tell me that this isn’t over.
Hang on just long enough.

If this is heaven
or if it’s just a warning,
say you will stay with me
even if it’s just ‘til morning.
If this is over then why is it so hard?
just say you will stay with me
one more night.

If you’re running, from your secrets
I will make you take them with you.
I am ready, I can take it.
You don’t have to carry them alone.
There’s a way out, if you want it,
to an end or a new beginning.
You just have to find it on your own.

If this is heaven
or if it’s just a warning,
say you will stay with me…

If this is over then why is it so hard?
Just say you will stay with me
one more night,
One more night
One more night.
Even if it’s just ‘til morning.
One more night.
One more night.
One more night.
Even if it’s just ‘til morning.
Even if it’s just ‘til morning.
